The Story of 7th Andy

A few years back my friend Todd Richards sent me some tracks he was working on and asked if I would be interested in writing lyrics for them. One of them became the song Aurelia, a version of which made it onto the album, The Oceans of Ganymede (I’ll share some other interesting versions of that one soon) and the other track became 7th Andy.
I’d been reading Ray Kurtweil and had become interested in the idea that consciousness could one day reside somewhere other than in a human body. That theme appeared in the song Robot, also on The Oceans of Ganymede, and was the main inspiration for 7th Andy as well.
The title, 7th Andy, was meant to signify the seventh version of an android prototype. The song is a love story between 2 such androids that begin to feel human emotions. The scene is a beach just after sundown. Andy and his girlfriend are nestled together next to a campfire staring out over the horizon. With their titanium skin, they have no sensitivity to cold, and yet they enjoy being close to one another, huddling against the chill of the approaching night, their carbon fiber hair blowing softly in the onshore breeze.
They feel a strong attraction to each other and also feel a vast sense of wonder as they ponder the sea and sky before them. Who created this vast universe that somehow gave birth to all beings, including them? Will their consciousness live on once their physical selves cease to exist? Humans are carbon based, they have iron in their blood that came from supernovas. Likewise, androids are made from materials that originated in dying stars and ultimately, they derive their energy from the same place we do, namely the Sun.
The song, 7th Andy lay fallow for several years. Musically, it didn’t really fit into any of the albums I released during that time period. Then, last year, via my microphone company, Soyuz, I decided to hold a mixing competition in conjunction with AEA Ribbon mics, Amphion Loudspeakers and Mix with the Masters. The idea was to uncover some hidden talent and give them some great prizes. We uploaded 6 different songs in different styles. Hundreds of people downloaded the multitracks and sent in their remixes. One of my favorites was a version of 7th Andy by a young engineer named Omar Raafat. Todd said it sounded like a kind updated China Girl, one of my favorite Bowie tracks. I’m excited to share it with you now and would love to hear what you think.

lyrics

Love is coming ‘round the bend
Tonight
Androids stroll beneath the moon
Distant comets
Fading Light
Mild as Los Angeles June
Circa 2092

7th Andy
With his smooth titanium skin
He’s not of the world of sin
Tiny sand dunes on the beach
Tonight
A couple sitting by the fire
Bioluminescent lights
Echoes of human desires
In their silicon and wires

7th Andy
With his smooth titanium skin
He’s not of the world of sin
A cyber dandy
With his carbon fiber hair
And his 19th century flair

Nananana
Hey hey
