Seventh Andy (Carlo Botto remix)

about

Late 70s LA was a crazy place to grow up. I lived near downtown and went to a small private school called Pilgrim. Our team used to practice football in LaFayette Park on 6th St. It was filled with drug dealers and homeless people. We must have been quite a sight in our shoulder pads and helmets, dodging sleeping vagrants as we were trying to catch passes.

There weren’t many white boys in my neighborhood. I hung out mostly with Black, Latin and Filipino kids. We listened to KDAY and KGFJ. We wore shiny shirts to the school dances and formed our own little pseudo “gangs”. Our gang was called the Jade Dragons as we were obsessed with Kung Fu! We played basketball non-stop and we loved to dance. The music of the era was mostly disco and funk. This was just before I made the switch to bands like X and The Clash and the whole “disco sucks” world of 1980 LA.

Now I’m well into middle age and it turns out that disco really doesn’t suck. To tell the truth, I never stopped liking it, even when I claimed I did. Ok, the lyrics were often vacuous but the music was great and the production was about as good as production ever got.

Where I lived, the sidewalks and streets were filthy, coated with a residue that was equal parts piss and smog dust. Disco sounded clean, smooth and slick. It sounded like all was right with the world. It sounded like the lobby of a 5 star hotel or a summer breeze on a beach in Miami.

One of my favorite disco producers was the Italian, Giorgio Moroder, creator of some of my all-time favorite Donna Summer tracks.

So, in the spirit of disco and Italian producers, I offer you New Song Friday track number 6., a remix of Seventh Andy by the highly talented (and fully Italian) Carlo Botto.

lyrics

Love is comin’ ‘round the bend
Tonight
Androids stroll beneath the moon
Distant comets fading light
Mild as Los Angeles June
Circa 2092

7th Andy
With his smooth titanium skin
He’s not of the world of sin
A cyber dandy
With his carbon fiber hair
And his 19th century flair

Tiny sand dunes on the beach
Tonight
A couple sitting by the fire
Bioluminescent lights
Echoes of human desires
In their silicon and wires

Born in the Summer of Love to a Jewish mother and a Canadian father, David's attraction to exotic climes was nurtured at an impressionable age by his father, a trucker, with whom David rode shotgun while he hauled shipping containers from the ports of San Pedro to the Southern Pacific train yards.
